'Awakening of the Goddess' 2020
The animated documentary titled ‘Awakening of the Goddess’, is a non-narrative based on documentary testimonials of survivors of gender-based violence (GBV) in India. These documentary testimonials of the women have been collected through anonymous social media surveys.
Since the film is still doing the festival rounds, it is not shared on social media. Kindly contact me for a private link if interested.
Video-Art Installation
The film is supposed to be projected onto an audience (solo) in an isolated room, where he/she watches his/her reflection in the mirror. The film thus lends itself to creating a visual illusion that ‘the audience is the victim’, irrespective of gender.
The experience aims to make the audience reflect on the projected illusion and raise important questions like, what is gender-based violence? Do women also inflict and contribute to the violence? How does it feel to be objectified? What is OK? Where is the thin line that discriminates one kind of violence from the other? And so on. These answers are then collected from the audience through a survey to contribute to an academic paper. The trailer of the act is shared below.
I love to explore and experiment with different art styles, materials, narratives and non-narratives in my stop-motion animation films.
